Social media can make or break your business. Share positive and helpful information and your following could massively increase. However, one wrong tweet could bring your business down overnight. Here are our social media do’s and don’ts…

Social Media Do’s and Don’ts

Social media dos and don'ts

Do you have a regular schedule for posting or tweeting

Do use HootSuite or tweet deck to help you schedule for weekends and holidays to give yourself a break

Do use images and videos

Do retweet and share positively to support other entrepreneurs and small businesses

Do share relevant and helpful information

Do interact with others positively

Do you use #hastags to make sure that you are searchable

Social Media dos and don'ts

Don’t complain, criticise or condemn. Social media is not the forum to do this.

Don’t defend yourself on social media if someone has complained about your business. Simply contact them directly and take it out of the social media forum.

Don’t express political opinions that may cause controversy (unless, of course, you are a politician!)

Don’t jump on the trending bandwagon without knowing what you are talking about!

Don’t have so many social media accounts that you don’t have time to manage them. Initially Facebook, Twitter and Google plus are enough.

Don’t let social media take over your life. If you think that this is happening, unlink from your phone and schedule half an hour or one hour a day in which to manage your social media.

Don’t let trolls attack you-block them!

Finally, if you find yourself in a tricky social media situation, try not to respond immediately. This can sometimes make things even worse. Don’t panic and it is a good idea to seek advice from a social media or PR company.
